Informatics—UC ReX

OVERVIEW

UC BRAID provides administrative oversight and governance, and links the informatics focus of UC-Research eXchange (UC ReX) with the needs of researchers. The UC ReX Informatics consortium has built the first cross-campus clinical query system capable of exchanging patient-level data as well as aggregates (counts and descriptive statistics) across five different UC Medical Centers, as well as some of their key partner institutions. It has done so by leveraging existing clinical data warehouses and building a scalable production system that utilizes state-of-the-art technology and management practices. The name of this new research tool is the UC ReX Data Explorer.


GOALS
Enable researchers and quality improvement specialists to query clinical data collected at the point of care at all UC campuses for research or quality improvement purposes under a common cross-institutional IRB approval process.
  • Identify and implement standards to ensure optimal data quality and readiness.
  • Continue to expand and maintain the current technical infrastructure of the i2b2 SHRINE system.
  • Implement user pilot test cases to access use, make process and technical improvements as needed.
  • Develop an integrated clinical data repository involving data from all five UC health campuses.
  • Establish data standards that ensure semantic consistency for biomedical data emanating from the five UC health systems to support translational science.
  • Establish agreed-upon procedures and operational parameters (ie, production uptime) for the integrated data warehouse.
  • Support informatics infrastructure for the integrated multi-campus clinical data warehouse system.


ACCOMPLISHMENTS to DATE
In September2011, UC ReX was funded by the UCOP as a UC BRAID initiative. Learn more about the University of California Research eXchange (UC ReX) initiative and the UC ReX Data Explorer tool that enables UC investigators to identify potential research study cohorts at the five UC medical centers.
